Proceedings of 16th International Conference on Grey Literature (GL-16), p.139 - 145, 2015/03

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) Library has collected Internet information related the Fukushima Accident. We previously reported the development of the Fukushima Accident Archive using the DSpace in 15th International Conference on Grey Literature. We have encountered a new challenging issue grey literature. In many cases, Internet information contains valuable numerical data. However, it is difficult to identify the existence of numerical data in the Internet sites because numerical data is not often organized in a systematic manner on the web sites. We considered such method as to identify numerical data and attempted to introduce "data flagging" system, which was previously used in the International Atomic Energy Agency's International Nuclear Information System (INIS). In this presentation, we will introduce our "data flagging" system for numerical data on the Internet and how we apply the system to our Fukushima Accident Archive.

Acquisition and provision of conference proceedings in the science and technology field; Case of Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute Library

Ikeda, Kiyoshi

Joho No Kagaku to Gijutsu, 55(5), p.219 - 223, 2005/05

Conference proceedings are information resources used for researchers to access latest research trends. Although they are important materials that should be collected by the library, it is generally very difficult to acquire them because they are not commercially available. JAERI (Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute) Library collects about 19,000 proceedings and makes them available for the researchers. This paper introduces JAERI Library's experience in acquiring conference proceedings in a variety of ways including collecting conference information from academic societies or researchers, utilizing INIS (International Nuclear Information System) database as well as provision of conference proceedings. JAERI-Conf series, which are the proceedings of conferences hosted by JAERI and published as JAERI's research reports, are also introduced.

The Effectiveness of providing electronic journals in JAERI

Statistics in Practice - Measuring & Managing (Proceedings of IFLA Satellite Conference), p.173 - 178, 2003/05

The JAERI has 10 branch research sites in Japan. Because of the resent budget shrinkage and increasing journal price, it becomes more difficult to keep sufficient journal coverage at each branch library. Some of the users can read printed journals for their research work while the others are obliged to request a photocopy of journal articles from the central library of JAERI or affiliated libraries. It is necessary to improve this information gap among the sites. One of our attempts was to provide the electronic journals through the intranet. We carried out the qualitative analysis on the trend of journals usage both in printed and in electronic form, from the viewpoint of the effectiveness of providing electronic journals. It was found out that the users having less printed journals more frequently access to the electronic journals. This means that electronic journals are useful for the solution of information gap among the sites. The analysis also indicated that there exists a cost-effective compromise between providing printed journals and providing electronic journals.

Study on reducing the generation of general waste

Aoki, Isao; ; Haga, Tetsuya; ; Sudo, Katsuo; Tsunashima, Yasumichi;

On August 1999, the Director of Tokai Work proposed an activity regarding recycling and reuse of general waste generated from Tokai Works. The activity was initiated by the Waste Management and Fuel Cycle Research Center, and is now being in progress through out the Tokai Works. In the course of this activity, Plutonium Fuel Center had settled the Working Group and the issues related to the waste reduction have been examined. This report collects the problems that became obvious through the survey of existing segregation method, treatment process, and the amount of the waste generation, and accounts for the concrete methodology for the recycling and reuse of general waste. In order to reduce waste, it is necessary to aware of the facing issues and adopt the countermeasures proposed in this report whenever possible. The activity will then leads us to reduce waste generation, which in turn will enable us to make 100 % waste recycling possible.

Book acquisition and cataloging circulation control sub-system

Yonezawa, Minoru; Mineo, Yukinobu; Itabashi, Keizo

Joho No Kagaku to Gijutsu, 37(12), p.555 - 562, 1987/12

Integrated library system has been developed using a stand-alone mini-computer in the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute library. This system consists of three sub-systems for serials control, books acquisition and circulation control. Serials control sub-system deals with subscription, acquisition, claiming and inquiry of journals. This has been operating since the beginning of 1985. Book acquisition sub-system, which has been started since April 1986, deals with accounting and cataloguing of books. Circulation control sub-system deals with circulation, statistics compilation, book inventory and retrieval, which has been operating since April 1987. This system contributes greatly not only to the reduction of the circulation work load but also to the promotion of the library services. However, the convenience in circulation processing should be improved for materials without catalogue information stored in the computer. The pertinence for maximum number of books retrieved has to be also reconsidered.
